Citi Open: Dan Evans Beats Talon Griekspur To Win His First ATP 500 Title

Britain’s Dan Evans won his first ATP 500 title by defeating Talon Grikspur in the final of the Citi Open in Washington, DC.

Evans, now world number 21, prevailed 7-5 6-3 over the Dutchman after a 90-minute rain stop. “To do the job I’ve done and to stick to it and succeed is amazing,” Evans said.

The 19-year-old American tennis player Coco Gauff defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari 6-2 6-3 to win the women’s tournament.

“It was really tough a few weeks ago,” said Gauff, the world number seven, who was knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon last month but has yet to drop a set at the Citi Open.

“We all felt that and I’m glad I was able to recover.”

Evans, the 33-year-old British second seed, needed four break points to win the first set, before the match was stopped 2-2 in the second set due to rain and thunder.

After the start of the second period, Evans held his remaining service matches until saving four break points in the penultimate game of the match.

“The last game summed up my week. “I got out of trouble and it’s been a great week,” said Evans, who started the tournament on a seven-game losing streak.

“I didn’t play well and I’m not happy with my game.”

He is the first Briton to win the tournament since Tim Henman in 2003.
