2023 Women’s World Cup: FIFA Takes Further Decision On Lauren James Red Card
England Lionesses midfielder, Lauren James will no longer participate in the 2023 Women’s World Cup after receiving a red card against Nigeria.
With the score still at 0-0, James was sent off for stepping on Michelle Alozie’s foot in the 70th minute.
Initially, the referee showed a yellow card before being advised to check the VAR monitor on the pitch.
He played against 10 men in extra time but won 4-2 in the final penalty shootout.
However, the unnecessary mark meant James played his final World Cup match when he was sent off for violent conduct which came with a three match ban.
FIFA rules state: “A player must be banned for at least three matches for violent behaviour; at least three matches or an appropriate amount of time for assault, including elbowing, punching, kicking, biting, spitting, or striking an opponent or other person.” Change the referee.
England have a maximum of three matches because they have only qualified for the quarter-finals.
